Bray of hope: Edwards ‘optimistic’ he’ll play for Jets

If it’s up to Braylon Edwards, he’s playing Monday night.

The newly re-signed wide receiver was limited in practice again yesterday by a hamstring injury, but Edwards told The Post he’s upbeat about being healthy enough to go for the Jets in Tennessee.

“I feel good,” he said. “I feel like it’s getting better each day. It’s made a substantial improvement, so I’m pretty hopeful and pretty optimistic about Monday. I think there’s a real good chance I can play.”

Edwards was released by the Seahawks this week, in part because of the hamstring problem that Seattle coach Pete Carroll said his own team’s medical staff felt would sideline the veteran wideout for at least three weeks.

Rex Ryan, speaking before yesterday’s workout, said Edwards didn’t do much in practice Thursday out of caution, but the Jets — who are severely shorthanded at receiver — are crossing their fingers Edwards can play against the Titans.

“I’m going to lean on the trainers, and we’ll see how he progresses,” Ryan said. “But we’re hopeful he’ll be able to go on Monday.”

Edwards’ knowledge of first-year offensive coordinator Tony Sparano’s scheme also is a question mark, but Edwards said the crash course he has received since being claimed on waivers has helped enough to get him through Monday night’s game.

“The offense has changed, but it’s still a lot of the same plays,” he said. “It’s just different names, but I’m grasping them.

“Football is football, so I think I would feel comfortable going out there.”

* The Jets appear unlikely to have tight end Dustin Keller (ankle) or wide receiver Stephen Hill (knee) against the Titans after both missed practice again along with cornerback Aaron Berry (hamstring) and wideout Clyde Gates (concussion).

Ryan said the only thing that gives him hope Keller might play is the extra day in the Jets’ schedule this week.

“If we had to play today, I don’t think he’d be playing,” Ryan said. “But with this being a Monday night game, hopefully, he’ll be able to get out there.”

Running back Bilal Powell (shoulder, toe) practiced on a limited basis after being held out Thursday, and defensive end Bryan Thomas (chest) also got limited time after sitting the day before.

Safety LaRon Landry, did not participate in practice yesterday because of a heel injury, but Ryan said it was a precaution and Landry is expected to play.

* Defensive end Quinton Coples was slapped with a $15,000 fine by the NFL this week for grabbing the face mask of Jaguars quarterback Chad Henne late in last week’s 17-10 victory.

The unnecessary roughness penalty was crucial at the time, too. Coples’ rookie mistake kept alive a drive that ended in a touchdown.
