Closer to the cliff

No deal.

President Obama and Congress have again failed to avoid the fiscal cliff of automatic tax hikes and spending cuts that could plunge the US into another recession.

Republican House Speaker John Boehner jetted home to Ohio for the weekend after meeting with Obama at the White House Thursday.

The two sides remain sharply divided on taxes and spending.

Obama wants to raise taxes on the wealthy while extending tax breaks for the middle class. Republicans oppose raising the tax rates on the top 2 percent amid a shaky economy. Meanwhile, the White House is resisting deeper trims to Medicare and other entitlement programs sought by the GOP.
