A Mike-Liu ‘hail’ storm

Mayor Bloomberg and Comptroller John Liu engaged in a war of words yesterday over the Taxi of Tomorrow.

Liu announced that he won’t register a contract negotiated with Nissan for a futuristic fleet of yellow-taxi minivans, citing issues about accessibility for the handicapped.

But Bloomberg shot back at Liu that the City Charter gives the mayor the power to ignore the comptroller’s objection.

“I’m not here to assassinate anybody, but it doesn’t make a lot of sense,” Bloomberg said on his weekly radio show. “In fact, it doesn’t matter. We can go ahead and do it anyway, which we will.”

During a press conference with advocates for the disabled, Liu responded, “Quite frankly, I’m tired of his bullying.”

He vowed to use “every available option, every available tool at our disposal,” to block delivery of the new taxis.
