Cliff worries

US stocks fell yesterday as another slide in Apple took a toll and investors unloaded some shares because of the uncertainty surrounding the “fiscal cliff” negotiations.

Gupta plea

Rajat Gupta, the former Goldman Sachs Group director who’s appealing his conviction for insider trading, said he shouldn’t have to pay the firm as much as $7 million in legal fees and other expenses.

MetLife flop

MetLife, the largest US life insurer, fell for a second straight day after forecasting that its 2013 profit may fall short of analysts’ estimates. It closed at $31.84, down 3 percent.

Knight decision

Knight Capital Group’s board heads into a pivotal weekend. The Jersey City brokerage is expected next week either to choose between two suitors — Virtu Financial and Getco — or to stay independent.
