Torres, part of Mets’ Pagan deal, heads back to Giants

Andres Torres’ disappointing tenure with the Mets officially ended yesterday when he agreed to a one-year deal worth $2 million that will return him to the Giants.

The Mets non-tendered Torres last month, but according to a club source were considering the possibility of signing him as a free agent.

Torres, who arrived as part of the trade that sent Angel Pagan to the Giants last December, earned $2.7 million in 2012, and the Mets had contemplated trying to bring him back for roughly half that amount.

The trade of Pagan for Torres and reliever Ramon Ramirez rates as maybe the biggest misstep during general manager Sandy Alderson’s regime with the Mets. Pagan was a key contributor to the Giants’ world championship team last season, while Torres and Ramirez struggled.

Torres, 34, hit just .230 with three homers and 35 RBIs with 13 stolen bases in 132 games for the Mets. He was bothered by strained right quadriceps in spring training, then missed most of the first month of the season after aggravating the injury on Opening Day.

Torres’ return to San Francisco comes as little surprise given his popularity in that city, after playing for the Giants’ world championship team in 2010.

Torres’ remaining affection for the Giants was evident in October, when he attended the NLCS at AT&T Park as a fan.

The Giants are expected to use Torres as a backup outfielder, having recently signed Pagan to a four-year deal worth $40 million.
