Giants rookies Wilson, Hosley no factors

ATLANTA — As roommates, David Wilson and Jayron Hosley spent Saturday night hunkered down in their hotel room awaiting yesterday’s game against the Falcons.

“He was doing his studying, I was doing my studying, both rookies with a lot of pressure on our shoulders, a lot of guys depending on us,’’ Hosley said.

It didn’t turn out so great for either Giants rookie in the 34-0 loss to the Falcons. Wilson didn’t have much room to maneuver on kickoff returns and, in his first NFL start at running back, gained 55 yards on 12 rushing attempts.

Hosley, starting in place of injured Prince Amukamara, had to come off the field briefly with a sprained ankle and when he returned was burned by Julio Jones on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Matt Ryan in the third quarter.

“I could have prevented it by keeping my outside leverage,’’ said Hosley, who was beaten by a step and got no help from any safety in the vicinity.

* WR Hakeem Nicks came up just short on a deep first-quarter pass after he had a step on the nearest defender.

“I was close, I wanted to pull it in but I didn’t,’’ he said. “I ran well, there was no excuse for that one, it was just out of my reach.’’

* LG Chris Snee hurt his hip in the second quarter and had to be replaced by Jim Cordle. Snee was able to return later in the game before Cordle finished up with the game out of hand.

“I’m upright,’’ Snee said when asked how he was doing. “Was in some pain.’’ He said, it’s going to take a lot’’ to keep him off the field.

* It’s been 256 games since the Giants were shut out in the regular season, back to Dec. 1, 1996, a 24-0 loss in Philadelphia. … Strange but true: The Giants are 1-5 the past six years in Week 15 but made the playoffs in four of the six years.

* Former Eagles CB Asante Samuel, who had yet another interception on Eli Manning, crowed about his new team now that he’s out of Philly.

“I guess they got tired of me picking [Manning] off, so they sent me somewhere else to make a better team over here,” said Samuel, who was traded to the Falcons this past offseason. “Shout out to [Andy] Reid. I love ya, Coach.”

* It is official: Lawrence Tynes is in a slump. He missed a 30-yard field goal attempt wide right in the first half, the sort of kick that is supposed to be automatic inside a dome. Tynes hit 28 of his first 31 field goals this season but has three misses in the last three games.

* Manning’s 9-yard connection with Domenik Hixon in the second quarter pushed Manning past Phil Simms and into first place on the Giants all-time completions list.
