ALBANY — Gov. Cuomo’s New Year’s resolution: tougher gun-control laws.

Cuomo said yesterday he plans to unveil a “full package” of gun-control laws in his State of the State speech Jan. 9, focusing on tightening a New York assault- weapons ban that “has more holes than Swiss cheese.”

Cuomo, who owns a hunting rifle he hasn’t used since taking office nearly two years ago, said a special legislative session this month to take up stronger gun laws is unlikely.

“I highly doubt it,” he told The Post’s state editor, Fredric U. Dicker on Albany’s Talk 1300 AM radio. “The only thing that’s going to happen in the next few days is Christmas.”

Senate Republicans have pushed for toughening penalties on gun crimes but have resisted gun-control measures.

Legislative sources said the GOP is open to limiting access to assault weapons, but said requiring micro-stamping of ammunition is unlikely to be part of any deal.

Cuomo yesterday announced that the state is observing a remembrance for the victims of the Newtown school shooting today, with a moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. and calls for churches to ring their bells 26 times.
