6 LIers in ID & tax ‘rip-off’

Six Long Island men stole the identities of residents of Puerto Rico and filed more than 11,000 false federal tax returns — seeking a total of $73 million in refunds, prosecutors charged yesterday.

Residents of the Caribbean commonwealth are exempt from filing federal tax returns as long as their income is earned there.

An indictment says the men claimed income from outside Puerto Rico and had the tax refunds sent to Long Island addresses.
