A ‘run’ for your money

Runners left in the lurch when the New York City Marathon was canceled by Hurricane Sandy can get their entry fee back.

The New York Road Runners said yesterday it was waiving its no-refund policy this time due to “extraordinary circumstances.”

Runners for the canceled Nov. 4 race will be offered three options, including a return of their entry fees. The fees ranged from $216 to $347 per person.

Runners who don’t claim the refund could accept a guaranteed spot in the 2013, 2014 or 2015 marathon instead, the club said. Or they can accept a spot in March’s NYC Half, a 13.1-mile race.

NYRR also offering full refunds for tickets purchased for race-week events such as the marathon eve dinner or reserved grandstand seating.

E-mails explaining the options will be sent to runners on Jan. 10, the club said.

The refund applies only to runners who had not canceled before Oct. 24, when weather forecasters began to warn of a devastating storm.

Sandy struck on Oct. 30, leaving areas like Staten Island, site of the starting line, devastated.

But for days, Mayor Bloomberg and New York Road Runners officials said the race would go on. Amid mounting criticism, they canceled it less than 48 hours before it would have started.
