LI power zap slap

Long Island officials yesterday lambasted a group of utilities executives for taking too long to restore power after Hurricane Sandy ravaged the area.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice demanded to know what seven representatives from LIPA and National Grid learned from the storm, and how they’re preparing for a future catastrophe.

LIPA CEO Michael Hervey said that the utilities are still trying to understand what happened and that Rice is rushing the process.

Bizarrely, LIPA Vice President Nicholas Lizanich said that he didn’t want to pressure his employees to come up with explanations so as to not “squash” their “creativity.”

“Mr. Lizanich, that is one of the most unbelievable statements I have ever heard,” Rice shot back.

She led last night’s hearing of the Moreland Commission, which is investigating the utilities’ response to the storm.
