Banged up Giants O-line faces tough test

This is hardly an ideal week for the Giants’ offensive line to be banged up and questionable.

With Ravens Pro Bowl nose tackle Haloti Ngata awaiting Sunday in Baltimore, it was little wonder Big Blue’s wounded line was a sensitive subject for coach Tom Coughlin yesterday.

Center David Baas (hip, shoulder) and guard Chris Snee (hip) both missed practice for the second day in a row, which couldn’t make Eli Manning feel good when combined with the season-ending injury this month to versatile and productive tackle Sean Locklear.

Although Coughlin sounded optimistic Baas and Snee would practice today, the Giants’ coach sounded a bit defensive when asked if he was concerned about a lack of depth along the offensive line.

“We have enough to have depth,” Coughlin said. “We have depth. We have [Jim] Cordle, we have [James] Brewer, we have [Selvish] Capers. We have some guys that can fill in there.”

Manning was sacked just once in last week’s 34-0 loss to the Falcons, but the Giants’ patchwork line figures to have its hands full with Ngata, Terrell Suggs and the rest of the Ravens’ fearsome pass rush Sunday — even if Baas and Snee recover.

Ngata was quiet in a loss to the Broncos last week, but put together one of his best games of the year the week before against Washington, recording five tackles and knocking Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III out of the game with a hard hit in the open field.
