What is it with “The Walking Dead” axing its showrunners?

AMC announced yesterday it’s renewing the biggest series in cable history for a fourth season — without showrunner and executive producer Glen Mazzara.

Mazzara, by the way, replaced showrunner Frank Darabont, who was fired after one season on the gory zombie apocalypse series starring Andrew Lincoln.

“Both parties acknowledge that there is a difference of opinion about where the show should go moving forward, and conclude that it is best to part ways,” AMC said in a statement.

“This decision is amicable and Glen will remain on for post-production on season 3B as showrunner and executive producer.”

Mazzara called his stint “an amazing experience,” but added that “it’s time to move on” from the series — which has smashed all cable ratings records and averaged over 10 million viewers in the fall.

“I have told the stories I wanted to tell and connected with our fans on a level that I never imagined,” he said in a statement. “It doesn’t get much better than that.”

The second half of Season 3 will premiere in February.
