Fund-raiser for grieving families

A grass-roots effort to raise $100,000 for each family of the 26 shooting massacre victims is taking off — having raised more than $230,000 in just days.

The “My Sandy Hook Family Fund” was started by Newtown residents to cover not just the families’ immediate needs, but long-term costs as well.

“We want to make sure the families don’t have to worry about paying for things like day care or car repair or things they shouldn’t have to think about while they get back on their feet,” said fund co-founder Rebekah Harriman-Stites, whose 7-year-old son was on the wrestling team with shooting victim Jack Pinto, 6.

“As a community, we have a lot of healing to do, but knowing that the nation is behind us and is here for us is an amazing feeling.”
