‘Thrones’ beer in March

What’s Dothraki for “Call me a cab?”

Game of Thrones” fans will have the chance to party like barbarians with the release of Iron Throne Blonde Ale, based on HBO’s medieval fantasy series (in which Dothraki is spoken).

The beer, from Ommegang — a brewery based in upstate Cooperstown, NY — will be available prior to the start of the show’s third season in late March.

It promises to deliver “a robust amount of pils, honey and aroma malts, and red wheat” — and includes Styrian and Hallertau hops, weird names that sound like they were ripped from a “Game of Thrones” script (Styrian hails from Slovenia, and Hallertau from Germany).

“Iron Throne is certainly fair in color and soft in appearance, yet it still possesses a complexity and bite to be on guard for,” says Ommegang Brewmaster Phil Leinhart.

Josh Goodstadt, HBO’s global licensing director, echoed a similar sentiment in Ommegang’s press release.

“Capturing the authenticity, essence and nature of the show, Iron Throne has the richness, quality and all of the elements one would expect in fine ale,” he said.

Ommegang pays HBO a “royalty” for the rights. Iron Throne Blonde was the first and only name considered for the beer, the brewery said.

Ommegang plans to release several more “Game of Thrones”-branded suds in the future.
