Bulls’ Noah retires gun celebration after Sandy Hook shooting

Joakim Noah is retiring his trademark six-shooter celebration in the wake of the horrific Sandy Hook shootings.

The Bulls star, who pantomimes firing off two guns after making a big play, did not once perform his signature move while picking up a triple-double in Chicago’s 100-89 win over Boston.

“You can’t joke around with things like that,” Noah said after the game. “Too many people are dying because of guns. We have a problem here with guns. So just trying to be a little bit compassionate about what’s going on.”

Noah began performing the move during the 2010-11 season after he drilled a jump shot in Keith Bogans’ face.

“I hit a jump shot in Keith Bogans‘ face and I started doing the guns and kept doing it,” he said. “It was kind of like a funny, comical thing. But I guess we’re in a situation right now where it’s not funny.”

Noah reacted instinctively to the shooting last Friday, calling for gun control on Twitter.

“This is so f—ed up… There needs to be some kind of gun control.. For real,” Noah tweeted.

In three games since the shooting, Noah has not done the celebration, citing not just the shooting in Newtown, but the recent string of gun violence across the country.

“It’s what happened in Connecticut. That was shocking to a lot of people,” Noah said Tuesday. “But things like this have been going on. We have a serious problem with that in Chicago. It’s crazy, man.

“You just hear about this summer, a movie theater. It’s just happening all the time. It’s horrible. … This gun thing in this country is no joke.”

Noah finished with 11 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists for his second career triple-double in the victory over the Celtics.
