Say high to E. Side trapeze

Lower East Siders may soon be flying in the sky.

The city is seeking proposals for a seasonal trapeze operation at Hamilton Fish Park on the Lower East Side — including 32-foot-high rigs, swings, safety nets and a big top.

It would operate over the swimming pools from mid-September to mid-May — when they are dry and empty.

There’s already one trapeze outfit in Manhattan, the Trapeze School of New York at Pier 40, which is closed for the winter.

School officials plan to submit a bid for Hamilton Fish Park, in hopes of making their business year-round.

“The Lower East Side is a very romantic side of the city,” said TSNY president and co-founder Jonathon Conant. “It’s gentrifying with a sense of art and this [trapeze swinging] is artistic.”

The city hopes it won’t have to spend a dime on the project. All equipment, instruction and insurance would be picked up by the winning vendor, according to project officials. If Parks officials receive a plan they like, it could be a go by September 2013.

The idea for a trapeze was hatched after Parks officials first considered a zip line.

That plan never got off the ground because the height required would have necessitated cutting some treetops.
