Fairfield finally tops St. Joes

Derek Needham hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 16 seconds left and Fairfield earned a 60-57 victory over Saint Joseph’s in nonconference action yesterday in Philadelphia.

The win was Fairfield’s first over Saint Joseph’s (5-4) since 1977-78, ending a 10-game losing streak in the series.

The Stags (8-5) have won four straight.

Loyola (Ill.) 54, Saint Peter’s 49

In Jersey City, Ben Averkamp scored 17 points, 13 from the foul line, to lead Loyola (Ill.) (8-3) past Saint Peter’s (5-6).

Boston Coll. 71, Providence 68

In Boston, Ryan Anderson had a pair of layups off Joe Rahon’s passes in the closing two minutes and finished with 24 points to lift Boston College (6-5) over Providence (8-3) in the 107th meeting between the schools.

Villanova 83, Monmouth 56

In West Branch, N.J., JayVaughn Pinkston scored 16 points and had eight assists to lead Villanova (8-4) past Monmouth (5-7), the Wildcats’ fourth consecutive victory.

In Hartford, Conn., Nate Sikma scored 15 points to lead Hartford (7-5) to a 56-46 victory over 4-8 Marist.

Elon 70, Columbia 69

In Manhattan, Jack Isenbarger knocked down a 3-pointer with two seconds left to give Elon (7-5) a victory over 5-5 Columbia.

Vermont 76, FDU 62

In Burlington, Vt., Luke Apfeld scored a career-high 26 points and Brian Voelkel had his third double-double in four games as Vermont (7-4) defeated 4-6 Fairleigh Dickinson.

La Salle 100, Sacred Heart 71

In Philadelphia, Ramon Galloway led six players in double figures with 22 points as La Salle (8-2) set a season-high for points for the second time in three days in a victory over 2-8 Sacred Heart.
