It’s totally fruitless! FreshDirect’s Web site down

FreshDirect, the online grocer, suffered a Web-site outage after a delay in the renewal of its Internet address, showing how maintaining a domain name can trip up even a dot-com company.

FreshDirect, which serves the New York City area, as well as New Jersey, Connecticut and Philadelphia, said in an e-mailed statement that it experienced a “renewal issue” yesterday with the Web address.

FreshDirect trucks have become a common sight in New York City as the company has expanded to more than 2,000 employees, according to its Web site.

Jason Ackerman, FreshDirect’s CEO, started the company in 1999 after working as an investment banker and analyst at firms such as Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette and Drexel Burnham Lambert.

FreshDirect was founded in 1999 by former investment banker Jason Ackerman, and is headquartered in Long Island City, Queens. Its motto is, “Our food is fresh. Our customers are spoiled.”

The outage serves as a black eye for a company built to utilize the advantages of e-commerce.

The company continued to make deliveries, it said on its Twitter account, though it acknowledged some Time Warner Cable and Verizon Wireless customers were unable to access the site.
