Another Big Blue defensive disaster

BALTIMORE — The Giants have not earned a playoff bid, in Jason Pierre-Paul’s eyes.

“[Shoot], do we deserve it by the way we played? Do we? [Shoot], I don’t think so,” Pierre-Paul said yesterday, delivering some profanity when asked if he was worried about the team’s playoff chances following its ugly 33-14 loss to the Ravens.

“It is what it is. We went out there and we pissed down our legs. There’s really nothing more I can say.”

When Pierre-Paul said “by the way we played,” it was unclear what he was referring to — whether he meant just yesterday’s game, the last two games or the Giants’ entire season. Regardless, the defensive lineman saw his team deliver a horrendous defensive display yesterday.

The Ravens racked up a season-high 533 yards, with Joe Flacco throwing for 309 and Ray Rice and Co. running for 224. The Giants also had no sacks and didn’t force a single turnover.

“There was definitely fire, but they threw water on it. They just pounded the run and we couldn’t stop the run. In order for us to get the pass rush going, we’ve got to stop the run first,” Pierre-Paul said. “If we can’t stop the run, then we don’t have a second option to rush.”

The Giants’ defense was demolished last week against the Falcons in Atlanta too, that time surrendering 34 points to Matt Ryan and Co. Yesterday Flacco led the Ravens on seven scoring drives, punching in three touchdowns and booting four field goals.

“We’re not making any plays on defense,” coach Tom Coughlin said.

The Giants also missed a slew of tackles on some big plays — running back Bernard Pierce was hit behind the line by Mark Herzlich but broke the tackle and evaded Spencer Paysinger for a gain of 18. Rice scored a touchdown after Will Hill and Stevie Brown both blew tackles.

Wideout Anquan Boldin converted a third and 19 after Brown and Corey Webster missed wrapping him up.

Only twice all game did the Giants force Baltimore to punt.

“It seemed like they had 13 guys on the field, and then two would run off. So we were in a messed up personnel, especially early,” linebacker Chase Blackburn said. “And then we basically had to stay more vanilla at times because personnel were coming in so late.”
