Jets report card

OFFENSE

The big quarterback change did not make much of a difference. Greg McElroy (14-of-24, 185 yards, 1 INT, 1 fumble 65.5 rating) did not have a chance to do much because he was under siege. McElroy was sacked 11 times, one shy of the NFL record. The Jets had two touchdown drives early and then stalled. They averaged a dismal 3.0 yards per rush. They gained just 83 yards. in the second half. F

DEFENSE

The Jets made the 28h ranked offense in the NFL look much better than that. They gave up just 223 total yards but committed several penalties that kept drives going and surrendered two long touchdowns to quarterback Philip Rivers in the second half. The secondary looked lost at times, a rare down week for the group. C

SPECIAL TEAMS

Mike Westhoff’s final home game did not start off well. Michael Spurlock returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown two minutes into the game. Joe McKnight returned four kicks for 122 yards, with a long of 46. The coverage was shaky on a few kicks. D

COACHING

The Jets played like a team with nothing to play for. That falls on coach Rex Ryan. The most head-scratching development was having Tim Tebow active though he had asked not to be used in the Wildcat if he wasn’t going to start. Tony Sparano tried some creative things, but his offensive line could not block long enough to pull things off. All in all it was another ugly day in an ugly season. F
