‘Dex’ won’t die

It’s hard to argue with success, especially if you’re a long-running TV show.

Add “Dexter” to the list of hit shows that talk about ending, but never quite do. After giving Showtime its best ratings ever for its seventh-season finale — 2.6 million viewers, about as good as “Mad Men” — the series is gearing up to start production on its eighth season. Network president David Nevins has said that he’s keeping an open mind about bringing the run of the show to a close after Season 8.

Executive producer Scott Buck told the Hollywood Reporter that even he didn’t know when the Michael C. Hall crime drama would wrap for good. “That’s Showtime’s decision,” he said. “As far as I know, no actual decision has been made yet.”

Although Hall has said that he would be fine with saying goodbye to “Dexter,” Nevins has hinted that there might be ways to make the plot more complex, especially now that Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) has full knowledge of Dexter’s activities.

Nevins and Buck could not be reached for comment.
