Gang-rape victim was ignored

NEW DELHI — The boyfriend of the 23-year-old Indian medical student who died last week of injuries suffered in a gang rape that has sparked protests said yesterday that police and passers-by at first failed to help the couple.

After the Dec. 16 assault aboard a bus, which left him beaten and bloodied, the rapists threw him and his girlfriend out onto the street — where their pleas for help were ignored for some 30 minutes, he said.

And then, he charged, officials wasted more time arguing over jurisdiction.

“A passer-by found us but did not even give her his jacket. The cruelty I saw should not be seen ever,” said the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

He added that it eventually took an hour and a half for them to reach a hospital.

Five suspects are already on trial and may face the death penalty.
