2013 tech is good to go

When it comes to consumer technology, what happens in Vegas definitely doesn’t stay in Vegas.

The Consumer Electronics Show is always a great glimpse into the future for tech heads, and the 2013 bacchanal in Las Vegas, which starts this week, will be no exception.

This year’s innovations move beyond touch screens and voice controls (though those will still be featured prominently), but on the horizon is tech you can wear, roll up, put in your pocket—even eat off.

Last year was Microsoft’s last keynote at the annual gadget confab; instead, Qualcomm will deliver the primetime presentation tomorrow.

But it’s companies like Samsung that will deliver the consumer fireworks. The South Korea electronics giant will unveil its latest television, an 85-inch, superhigh-definition smartscreen, and “Evolution Kits” that can upgrade TV hardware and software yearly.

Besides the usual big brands, from LG to Sharp, some startup manufacturers will be looking to find their geek groove and make a name for themselves. Smartwatch maker Pebble, which raised the money for its wearable electronics on Kickstarter, will be at CES for the first time.

A major but little-known touch-screen player, Atmel, said it has its sights on launching a next-generation tablet from one of its top clients. Atmel has worked with Samsung, LG and others, and its touch screens are pioneering the future of flexible technology.

For some companies, the show represents not only new ideas but also a fresh start: Think BlackBerry. Research In Motion, hoping to launch a corporate comeback, will present its Black-Berry 10 phones at the show.
