Marquette beats back Georgetown

Davante Gardner made two free throws with 8.3 seconds left and Marquette had to hang on while No. 15 Georgetown missed a deciding free throw, giving the Golden Eagles a 49-48 victory, yesterday in Milwaukee.

With Marquette (11-3, 2-0 Big East) leading 49-46, Greg Whittington of the Hoyas (10-2, 0-1) was fouled by Trent Lockett on a baseline 3-point shot with 2.3 seconds left. He made the first two free throws, but after Marquette coach Buzz Williams called a timeout, hit the front of the rim on the final attempt.

Duke 80, Wake Forest 62

In Durham, N.C., Ryan Kelly had another big day against Wake Forest, scoring a season-high 22 points and No. 1 Duke (14-0, 1-0 ACC) rout of the Demon Deacons (7-6, 0-1).

Arizona 60, Utah 57

In Tucson, Ariz., Solomon Hill had 19 points, Mark Lyons hit two free throws with 7.2 seconds left and No. 3 Arizona (14-0, 2-0 Pac-12) dodged another last-second shot to beat Utah (8-6, 0-2).

Illinois 74, Ohio St. 55

In Champaign, Ill., Brandon Paul scored 19 points and No. 11 Illinois (14-2, 1-1 Big Ten) bounced back from a tough loss to Purdue in its conference opener to beat No. 8 Ohio State (11-3, 1-1).

Gonzaga 81, Santa Clara 74

In Santa Clara, Calif., Kelly Olynyk made a key putback with 1:55 left on the way to a career-high 33 points, and No. 10 Gonzaga (15-1, 2-0 WCC) held off a late rally to beat Santa Clara (12-4, 1-1) for its sixth straight win.

Missouri 66, Bucknell 64

In Columbia, Mo., Phil Pressey scored a career-high 26 points and Laurence Bowers added 16 to help No. 12 Missouri (11-2) get by Bucknell (13-3).

Kansas St. 73, Oklahoma St. 67

In Manhattan, Kan., Rodney McGruder scored all but two of his 28 points in the second half, and No. 25 Kansas State (12-2, 1-0 Big 12) beat No. 22 Oklahoma State (10-3, 0-1).

N.C. St. 78, Boston College 73

In Boston, Scott Wood atoned for a scoreless first half with 12 points in the second, hitting two 3-pointers and six free throws down the stretch as No. 23 North Carolina State (12-2, 1-0 ACC) held off Boston College (8-6, 0-1).
