Triche sparks Orange

Brandon Triche had 20 points and James Southerland scored 12 of his 17 in the second half to help No. 7 Syracuse overcome a slow start and win its Big East road opener 55-44 over South Florida yesterday in Tampa.

C.J. Fair had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Orange (14-1, 2-0), who won for the fourth straight time following a four-point loss to Temple.

Victor Rudd led South Florida (9-4, 0-1) with 15 points.

Trey Burke had 19 points and a career-high 12 assists to lead No. 2 Michigan (15-0, 2-0 Big Ten). Devyn Marble scored 14 points for the visiting Hawkeyes (11-4, 0-2).

Kansas 69, Temple 62

Kevin Young had 16 points as sixth-ranked Kansas (12-1) fended off pesky Temple (10-3).

In Minneapolis, Austin Hollins hit five 3-pointers during a three-minute stretch in the second half, finishing with 19 points for the ninth-ranked Gophers (14-1, 2-0 Big Ten).

In New Haven, Kenny Boynton scored 28 points for the 13th-ranked Gators (10-2). Justin Sears led Yale (5-11) with 15 points.

Loyola 74, St. Peter’s 58

In Baltimore, Erik Etherly scored a season-high 24 points for the Greyhounds (11-5, 3-1 MAAC). Yvon Raymond led the Peacocks (6-8, 1-3) with 16 points.

Virginia 61, UNC 52

Joe Harris scored 19 points as host Virginia (11-3) rallied to beat North Carolina (10-4) in the ACC opener for both schools.
