NFL: Bears hire Trestman as head coach

The Bears hired Montreal Alouettes coach Marc Trestman to replace the fired Lovie Smith yesterday. It’s the first head-coaching job in the NFL for Trestman.

The Cardinals, still looking for a head coach, interviewed Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and plan to talk to Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians.

Tennis: Serena, Murray advance

Serena Williams and Andy Murray advanced scored comfortable victorries today in the second round of the Australian Open in Melbourne. Williams, the women’s No. 3 seed, defeated Garbine Muguruza 6-2, 6-0 before Murray, her counterpart in the men’s draw, ousted Joao Sousa, 6-2 6-2, 6-4. Also advancing was Victoria Azarenka, the women’s top seed and defending champion, and No. 10 Caroline Wozniacki.

ETC.: LeBron youngest to score 20,000 points

LeBron James became the youngest player in NBA history to score 20,000 points and also surpassed 5,000 assists in the Heat’s 92-75 win over the Warriors. … Austin Rivers (eight points) won his first NBA game against his dad as the Hornets beat coach Doc Rivers and the Celtics 90-78.

San Diego State said it will remain in the Mountain West Conference and will not join the Big East this fall. The Big East has now had 19 schools depart for other conferences.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter was given a contract extension through 2018. … All-Star pitcher Matt Harrison and the Rangers agreed to terms on a five-year, $55 million contract.
