Handgun found in backpack of 7-year-old Queens elementary school student

A loaded handgun was discovered in the backpack of a boy at a Queens elementary school this morning, law-enforcement sources said.

A school official discovered a .22-caliber handgun in the backpack of a 7-year-old at Wave Preparatory Elementary School in Far Rockaway about 8 am., sources said.

School safety agents responded, and the gun was removed for investigation. The school, located on Briar Place near Collier Avenue, went into lockdown.

Students at nearby P.S. 215 were allowed in and out.

The first-grader came out of the school early this afternoon with a female relative, and smiled cheerfully as he went into the police van with her. Police took them to the 101st precinct stationhouse.

Police believe the student’s brother is part of a gang, sources added.
