GOLF: Rookie Henley wins Sony Open

Russell Henley became the first PGA Tour rookie to win his debut in 10 years with a record-setting performance in the Sony Open in Honolulu.

Henley, a 23-year-old from Macon, Ga., birdied his last five holes to close with a 7-under 63 for a three-shot win over Tim Clark. Henley finished at 24-under 256, breaking by four shots the Sony Open scoring record. It was the second-lowest score for a 72-hole tournament in PGA Tour history, one shot behind Tommy Armour III at the Texas Open in 2003.

Louis Oosthuizen shot a final round 6-under 66 to beat Scott Jamieson of Scotland by a single stroke and win the Volvo Champions yesterday in Durban, South Africa.

Colin Montgomerie and Paul McGinley are the favorites for the European Ryder Cup captaincy, which will be decided tomorrow by the Tournament Players Committee meeting in Abu Dhabi.

NHL: Habs send Gomez home

Scott Gomez has been sent home by the Canadiens for the season. General manager Marc Bergevin said at the opening of training camp he will buy out the 33-year-old center’s contract next summer to remove his team-high $7.3 million salary cap hit from the books. Under the new collective bargaining agreement signed Saturday, the cap is to plunge by about $10 million next season, but teams will be allowed two “amnesty” buyouts to help reach the cap. Gomez, a former Devil and Ranger, has been a disappointment on the ice the last two seasons. Last season, he was limited to 38 games by injuries.

The Hurricanes traded goaltender Brian Boucher and defenseman Mark Alt to the Flyers in exchange for center Luke Pither.

Chelsea, a 4-0 winner at Stoke on Saturday, can keep alive its slim hopes of catching the Manchester clubs by beating Southampton on Wednesday in their game in hand to reduce the gap to United to 11 points.
