TENNIS: Radwanska advances at Aussie Open

Agnieszka Radwanska, the women’s No. 4 seed, extended her winning streak to 11 matches as she rolled into the third round of the Australian Open with a 6-3, 6-3 win today over Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu.

With top-ranked Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams on the other half of the draw, Radwanska’s main obstacles to reaching the final are 2011 French Open champion Li Na, who beat Olga Goortsova 6-2, 7-5 to reach the third round, and potential semifinal rivals Maria Sharapova or No. 5 Angelique Kerber. Kerber advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Lucie Hradecka. Sharapova was scheduled to play later against Japan’s Misaki Doi. No. 9 Samantha Stosur, a hometown favorite, was upset in the second round by Jie Zheng, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.

NFL: McCoy gets Chargers’ top job

Mike McCoy, who had been the offensive coordinator for the Broncos. is the new head coach of the Chargers. The 40-year-old McCoy replaces Norv Turner, who was fired along with general manager A.J. Smith after the Chargers finished 7-9 and missed the playoffs for the third straight season.

Roger Springfield, the former media director for Syracuse’s athletic department, pleaded not guilty and was arraigned in Onondaga County Court on four counts of unlawful surveillance after he was charged with secretly making locker-room videotapes of male athletes. Authorities said the videos were made in the locker rooms of the football team and the men’s lacrosse and soccer teams. Springfield, 57, was ordered to return to court Jan. 22.

Paul McGinley was chosen as Europe’s Ryder Cup captain for 2014. … Former Portugal playmaker Paulo Sousa agreed to become head coach of the Red Bulls, a source said.

Ryan Evans scored 13 points as visiting Wisconsin (13-4, 4-0) posted a 64-59 victory over No. 2 Indiana (15-2, 3-1) to take sole possession of the Big Ten lead.

Roy Hibbert, in the waning minutes of the Pacers’ 103-76 win over the Bobcats, lost a $500 bet when he told teammates on the floor he’d pay them $100 each if they kept the Bobcats from scoring 80 points. “I guess I have to go find an ATM,” he said.

In Los Angeles, Dwight Howard had 31 points and 16 rebounds, Kobe Bryant also scored 31 points and the Lakers beat the Bucks 104-88 for their second straight win.
