The anticipation preceding the premiere of “The Carrie Diaries” on Monday did not persuade large numbers of viewers to take a walk down memory lane with one of TV’s most-watched and talked-about characters.

It was what they call a soft premiere, about 1.6 million viewers. Carrie Bradshaw had at least that many Manolos.

The Twitterverse was typically apoplectic with reactions to the show from around the world. which ran from slavish devotion over the generous use of sequins to outright suspicion.

While “Jersey Shore” mom Snooki tweeted that she loved the show, some “Sex and the City” scholars wondered why 16-year-old Carrie, played by 19-year-old actress AnnaSophia Robb, is so close with her dad (Tom Lescher) when the elder Carrie says her dad left the family when she was little.

“The Carrie Diaries” is based on a 2010 series of novels by Candace Bushnell, who created “SATC.”

Its young heroine lives in Connecticut with her father, gets an internship at a law firm in Manhattan and is ultimately taken under the wing of influential style editor at Interview magazine.
