Worst ‘Idol’ site to shut down

Vote for the Worst, the Web site that has been encouraging fans of “American Idol” to vote for the crummiest singer on the show to make the contest a bit more entertaining, is going out of business.

The Web site, which championed the under-talented Sanjaya Malakar in 2007, was credited with stirring up enough votes each week to keep him on the show when more talented singers were getting sent home.

Vote for the Worst — which calls itself “American Idol’s biggest critic” — said yesterday, “We’re leaving before we get completely bored” with the show.

“It’s been a fun ride for the last 9 seasons of ‘American Idol’ and various other terrible reality shows,” said a notice posted on the site yesterday by its founder, Dave Della Terza.

“The show will be lucky to last a few more unmemorable seasons,” he said.

The ratings for “Idol,” while down, still make it the top entertainment show on TV. (Only NBC’s Sunday night NFL game is more highly rated.)

The site will not end right away, Della Terza says, but at the end of Season 12, which starts tonight.
