Joe’s a go

Joe Lhota just made it official, formally declaring his candidacy for the 2013 Republican mayoral nomination.

Though hardly a surprise, the entry into the race to succeed Mayor Bloomberg by this former deputy mayor and MTA chairman is welcome.

As we’ve noted before, Lhota brings to the campaign a sensibility wholly lacking among his Democratic rivals: an understanding of how New York can — and should — be run.

The Democratic gaggle, on the other hand, seems to be battling mainly to win the blessing of the unions.

In sharp contrast to the blandness of the Democratic field, Lhota brings a refreshing candor. (Think Ed Koch or Rudy Giuliani.)

Even before Superstorm Sandy, Lhota distinguished himself for his leadership and executive management skills. And unlike his rivals, he understands how to balance a budget and spur economic growth.

Lhota’s emergence as a credible GOP challenger — even in a city that is 6-1 Democratic — will force debate on issues that would otherwise be buried.

Just by running, Joe Lhota has shaken up the race for City Hall.

That can only be for the better.
