Vivienne Tam

The Who: Miss USA Nana Meriwether continued her civic duties as fashion ambassador, while Carmen Electra, sitting close to Angela Simmons, attracted every shutterbug in the house.

The What: A collision of pop-culture and political influences, Tam kicked-off the Chinese New Year with a showing of boxy silhouettes, military-like details and separates that doubled as message boards. One print, dubbed “Pop Culture Obama,” showed the commander in chief smiling and in sunglasses. Other looks — which were mostly black, white, red and blue — we’re emblazoned with characters meaning “Wan Sui” (long live) and nods to the SaveLoveGive.com micro-financing effort Tam supports.

The Highlight: There were a few star pieces, but it was the collection’s cohesiveness that was most impressive.

The Takeaway: We imagine that these clothes will start many conversations — many long conversations.
