PC name game in the NFL

The Issue: Whether political correctness should force teams to abandon their potentially offensive names.

***

Sports teams adopt names they admire, not to humiliate anyone (“Sacking the Redskins,” Editorial, March ).

That is why there are no teams named the dolts or cowards, etc. They choose names that denote power, strength, speed and other virtues.

The Washington Redskins have over 80 years and millions of dollars invested in that name.

Asking them to give up a valuable property and business asset is foolish. Most Native Americans, including my wife, take no offense.

This is political correctness on steroids and should be stopped right now.Joseph Santora

If I were the owner of the Redskins and were legally forced to rename my team, not only would I do so, but I would move my team out of Washington.

If it can’t keep the name, there’s no reason why Washington should keep the team.

I’d move the franchise to Los Angles and start anew. The owner would probably get an awesome cash incentive to go there, along with an influx of merchandising money from the new team apparel, and if he keeps the Redskins’ trademark, he could sell Redskin merchandise under a “vintage” or “heritage” label.

One move, double profit. James Lautier
