Brooklyn beats out Manhattan in population boom

The hipsters are multiplying.

Booming Brooklyn is leading the city’s population explosion, according to figures released today.

Census data shows that the city’s largest borough grew by 2.4 percent to 2,565,635 between 210 and 2012, which surpassed Manhattan’s 2.1 percent growth to 1,619,090.

Queens came next, adding 1.9 percent more residents to 2,272,771 followed by The Bronx’s 1.7 percent jump to 1,408,473 and Staten Island’s 0.4 percent increase to 470,728.

Overall, the city’s population went up 2 percent to 8,336,697.

The new numbers gave Mayor Bloomberg an opportunity to crow that his administration’s policies have made New York hotter than ever.

“For the first time since 1950, more people are coming to New York City than leaving,” the mayor said.

“There’s no better indication than the strength of our city than a record high population and a net population influx. People are voting with their feet.”

The city now accounts for 42.6 percent of the state’s population, up from 42.2 percent in 2010.
