Yankees on hook for $91 million to injured players

TAMPA — When the Yankees take the field against the Red Sox a week from today, they will be paying $91 million to players not on the Opening Day man roster.

Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Derek Jeter and Curtis Granderson will be on the disabled list and combine for $82.5 million. And the Yankees are paying $8.5 million to A.J. Burnett, who is with the Pirates.

The total of $91 million is more than the estimated 2013 payrolls of 15 big league teams and tied with the Mets.

* Robinson Cano, who didn’t play Saturday or yesterday, will return to the Yankees’ lineup tomorrow. After leading the Dominican Republic to the World Baseball Classic title, Cano played for the Yankees Thursday and Friday, then left for the Dominican on Saturday to visit his son.

* Mariano Rivera worked a scoreless inning of yesterday’s 7-6 win over the Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field with the peace of mind that tests on his head didn’t indicate anything more than possible migraines.

“Anything that goes on with my head I’m worried. I wanted to know what it was,’’ Rivera said. “Knowing that everything is fine is what I wanted.’’

“He mentioned he was having some migraines and there is a fire drill you have to run through just to be cautious and take every precaution and we did that,’’ general manager Brian Cashman said. “We did that expecting the results to be negative. He may have the migraines, but all the tests were good.’’

* Brennan Boesch won’t return from a left rib cage problem until at least tomorrow.

“He thinks we are being overly cautious,’’ Cashman said of the outfielder, who was scratched from Friday’s game against the Twins in Fort Myers and hasn’t played since.

* Chien-Ming Wang will work out today at the Yankees’ minor league complex today. The right-hander signed a minor league deal Saturday and will pitch for Triple A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

* Ronnier Mustelier’s game-winning homer lifted the Yankees over the Rays yesterday. Kevin Youkilis homered twice and Travis Hafner once.

* According to Cashman, Teixeira is wearing the workout room out.

“He is a monster, doing all this stuff with his legs and his arms,’’ Cashman said. “He is making sure whatever he can do while being down because of the wrist that he can close the gap as best as he possibly can.’’
