Albany nixes speed cameras

ALBANY — It’s another red light for speed cameras in the city.

The new state budget will not authorize installing up to 40 cameras in school zones to catch lead-footed drivers.

The Assembly pushed a plan to fine speeders $25 to $100 when caught by the cameras, which proponents say would save lives. But the idea has now failed to win Albany’s approval for a third straight year.

Other cities have found the technology unreliable, said state Sen. Martin Golden (R-Brooklyn), and senators from other parts of the state have voiced concern about limiting a pilot program to the Big Apple.

“If the technology is proven, if speeding is reduced and fatalities are reduced, that would be a strong reason this bill should get done,” Golden told The Post yesterday, adding the cams could still be approved during this legislative session.
