Schumer joins opponents to LG’s Jersey headquarters plan

Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) just joined Bette Midler and members of the Rockefeller clan in opposing electronics giant LG Electronics’ new Garden State headquarters.

The group, called Protect the Palisades, has been protesting the planned Englewood Cliffs, NJ, headquarters amid concerns that it will rise up above the swath of trees overlooking the Hudson River, known as the Palisades — thus spoiling the otherwise pristine skyline.

LG, meanwhile, has argued that the new headquarters will add close to 2,000 high-tech jobs to the Englewood Cliffs area.

And the project has been backed by the town’s mayor, Joseph Parisi.

Schumer on Tuesday gave the opposition a boost by saying he, too, finds the project troubling.

“Sadly, this LG tower would stick out like a sore thumb in one of the rarest places of all.”

He also requested LG build sideways instead of up, saying it should reduce the height of the tallest planned building, and build it “horizontally, keeping the same planned square footage and also not interfering with the treasured landscape and unique view.”
