Yankees’ Cano has long been a ‘diamond’ star

Robinson Cano (Paul J. Bereswil)

Robinson Cano hinted at a future affiliation with Jay-Z when he flashed the diamond-shaped hand gesture popularized by the hip-hop star, entertainment mogul and rookie sports agent during a Yankees game in 2010.

Cano cut ties with agent Scott Boras yesterday to join a new partnership between CAA Sports and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation entertainment company.

The sign, sometimes formed as a triangle, is most commonly associated with Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella Records and Roc Nation brand — where the “rock” in the label’s name is symbolized by a diamond shape.

Jay-Z’s wife, singer Beyonce Knowles, made the symbol during her Super Bowl halftime show in February, bringing it increased attention. Other sports figures, most notably Cano’s teammate Alex Rodriguez and NBA superstar LeBron James, have been known to flash the sign, and it has gained such pop-culture traction that even buttoned-up figures such as Warren Buffett and NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly have been photographed in the pose.

One conspiracy theory suggests the triangle represents the “all-seeing eye” and is connected to the Illuminati, a purported secret society, and Satanic worship.
