Hawkins leaves Mets to sign with Rockies

The Mets suffered their first loss of the offseason late Monday, with LaTroy Hawkins signing a one-year deal with the Rockies worth a reported $2.5 million.

The 40-year-old right-hander went 3-2 with a 2.93 ERA and 13 saves with the Mets. He took over as closer after Bobby Parnell was lost for the season in late July with a neck injury.

Hawkins, who turns 41 next month and pitched for the Rockies in 2007 during a well-traveled 19-year career, had expressed a desire to remain with the Mets.

Vic Black, acquired from the Pirates in the Marlon Byrd trade in August, is another potential Plan B at closer should Parnell not return to the role.
