Devils’ Volchenkov could be disciplined for elbow

Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov will almost certainly be hearing from the league today after his elbow to the head of Brad Marchand at the 15:11 mark of the second period during the Bruins’ 5-4 win last night at the Prudential Center.

Volchenkov went to the left wing boards and plastered Marchand with his left elbow. The Bruins’ agitator immediately grabbed at his head with two hands, and went to the ice in a heap. He wobbled to the locker room with the help of teammates, and did not return.

Bruins coach Claude Julien said he had not talked to doctors and had no update on Marchand, while Devils’ coach Pete DeBoer said he didn’t get a good look at the hit from the bench and will reevaluate things tomorrow when he knows if Volchenkov will be available or not.

Volchenkov has been suspended once before, a three-game ban in February of 2011 for an elbow to the head of then-Hurricane Zack Boychuk.
