Vallone ‘pops’ off at Quinn

Christine Quinn came under fire yesterday for her decision two years ago to slash a scholarship fund named after Councilman Peter Vallone Jr.’s father.

Fellow Dem Vallone (Queens), whose dad, Peter Vallone Sr., created the scholarship when he was council speaker in 1998, blasted Quinn (right) for cutting the $6 million fund for CUNY students in 2011 following a fight they had over renaming the 59th Street Bridge for Ed Koch.

“That money was ripped from 15,000 kids — kids who are spending in excess right now of $10,000 a year when you added expenses like books,” Vallone said at a news conference with several other council members and two of Quinn’s mayoral rivals.

Quinn insisted eliminating the scholarship was not retribution for her souring relationship with the younger Vallone.

She said, “As soon as there are resources back that we could restore the scholarship to a full level, we will love to do that.”

Vallone also said he plans to push for a vote on several of his bills without Quinn’s support, including one to establish a registry for animal abusers.
