Quinn’s ‘care’ package

Mayoral contender Christine Quinn wants to spend $32 million in public money to expand the city’s child-care tax credit to the middle class.

Quinn, the City Council speaker, is hoping to vastly increase the bonus so it would apply to families earning as much as $170,000 — up from about $30,000 now.

She announced a bill that would give families making between $60,000 and $150,000 a $300 annual credit for each child enrolled in day care.

Lower-income families would receive up to $950 per kid, she said.

“That’s real money in the pockets of New Yorkers at a time when, more than ever, every penny counts,” said state Sen. Simcha Felder (D-Brooklyn), who is sponsoring the bill in Albany.

Another Democratic candidate, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, said the plan “won’t put a serious dent in the enormous costs facing parents or add a single new seat for a child in need” of day care.
