Midlife crisis now suicidal

BUFFALO, NY — The suicide rate among middle-aged New Yorkers rose 42 percent from 1999 to 2010, far outpacing the 28 percent increase seen among peers nationwide, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study released yesterday.

Steven Dubovsky, chairman of psychiatry at the University at Buffalo, cited several reasons for the rise, including tough economic times and difficulty in getting mental-health care.
