Amar’e taking shot at owning Israel hoops team

Knicks forward-center Amar’e Stoudemire has said in a Twitter post that he’s part of a group bidding to buy Israel’s Hapoel Jerusalem basketball team.

“Excited to join the partnership that is giving back to the city of Jerusalem by offering the Hapoel basketball team a fresh start,” Stoudemire, a k a @Amareis real, tweeted yesterday.

And Ori Allon, co-founder of the New York-based real- estate Web site Urban Compass, wrote a Twitter post that Stoudemire retweeted.

“Proud to partner with @Amareisreal & others on building a promising future for the Hapoel Jerusalem basketball club,” it said.

An e-mail sent to an address on Hapoel Jerusalem’s Web site seeking comment on the posts wasn’t immediately returned, nor was a phone message left at the office of Stoudemire’s agent.

Stoudemire has been exploring his possible Jewish heritage since visiting Israel in 2010. He’ll return to Israel next month, serving as an assistant coach on the Canadian team in the Maccabiah Games, The New York Times reported.
