Schremp goal lifts Islanders in shootout

During yesterday’s morning skate, Rob Schremp scored on Martin Biron four straight times before the Islanders hosted the Blue Jackets.

Then, last night, Schremp netted one that actually counted, as he beat Columbus’ Steve Mason with the only goal in the shootout in the Isles’ 2-1 win at the Coliseum.

“A lot of credit goes to Marty,” Schremp said with a laugh after the Isles won their third in four games. “He gave me a lot of confidence.”

Maybe Biron should be generous more often.

Even after last night’s victory, the Isles have the fewest amount of goals in the league.

And last night they were also outshot 42-25, despite four third-period power plays. So as much as Schremp’s goal was needed — as was Josh Bailey’s first goal in 15 games — the Isles relied most of all on Dwayne Roloson, who made 41 saves and all three in the shootout.

“He gets in that mode and shuts them down,” said Schremp, who’s been a healthy scratch more often than not. “He settles the game down when we need it.”

⇒ Rick DiPietro is scheduled to practice today and then play a game for Bridgeport in the AHL over the weekend, but he is being more cautious than ever.

“I’m not putting this team’s chances to win a game in jeopardy because I come back too early or [put] myself in jeopardy,” said DiPietro, who left a start with Bridgeport on Dec. 11 after experiencing leg tightness. “I’d like to think I’m smarter than that at this point after making plenty of mistakes. Hopefully, I’ve learned from them.”
