It’s back to the blue and gold for New York drivers.
State-registered cars will be outfitted with new retro-style license plates starting next April — for a fee.
Car renewals and new registrations will be automatically hit with a $25 new plate charge, and any driver that wants to keep their current letter and number combination will have to pay an additional $20, officials said.
In all, the Department of Motor Vehicles said the fees will dump $129 million into the state’s general fund.
The DMV Commissioner expects mixed reviews on the new plates, whose design dates back to the early 1980s.
“There will be mixed feelings no matter what design is out there. You’ll get people who like it and people who don’t like it,” said Commissioner David Swarts.
“I’m hoping they do, because the retro plate has a kind of jazzed up feel.”
Plates lose their visibility and their ability to reflect light over time, Swarts said. The current “Empire” plates started fading after five years.
