Surge won’t get Mets’ F-Mart to bigs

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Although he continues to be otherworldly in the Grapefruit League, Fernando Martinez almost certainly is not going to be on the Mets’ Opening Day roster.

Martinez blasted a go-ahead, three-run homer in the eighth inning of the Mets’ 4-2 win over the Red Sox yesterday, and is hitting .538 (14-for-26) with three homers and 10 RBIs this spring. But Manuel said there’s little chance Martinez will be with the Mets to start the season, even if he continues to hammer the ball.

“That would be difficult in all honesty,” Manuel said. “The center field part is very important for us now.”

Manuel’s explanation was that the Mets are primarily looking for defense more than offense in center.

“Right now we have Gary [Matthews Jr.] and Angel [Pagan] slated for that spot,” Manuel said.

Pagan’s hitting .292 with a .370 on-base percentage and blasted a walk-off homer on Monday. And Matthews Jr. is batting .333 with two homers.

Martinez’s homer came off righty Ramon Ramirez, who had a 2.84 ERA in 70 games for the Sox last season.

“Right now I’m feeling [that I’m a major leaguer],” Martinez said. “It’s baseball. It’s the same game. I’m not trying to do too much.”

* Mike Pelfrey’s secondary success was a first-rate development.

The Mets sinkerballer said he threw “by far’ the most secondary pitches he ever has thrown in a game.

Pelfrey, though, delivered not just secondary quantity but quality. He produced a terrific effort against the Red Sox, hurling four innings of one-run ball while allowing four hits, all singles.

Pelfrey commanded his slider and curve and saw his splitter develop. He said he believes all of this will help him during the season, providing him with more weapons than just his sinker.

“One day I want to become an actual pitcher,” he said with a laugh.

Said Jerry Manuel, “He faced a pretty good lineup. The first five, six, seven hitters [are] major league hitters. To perform in that manner against those guys, that’s pretty impressive. That’s a big-time American League East team. To do that is good.”

* The Indians claimed Anderson Hernandez on waivers. . . . The Mets’ first spring night game is tonight. They will visit the Marlins in Jupiter. Oliver Perez will start, with Francisco Rodriguez set to make his second spring appearance. . . . The Mets wore green caps for St. Patrick’s Day.
