Starwood buys site for hotel

Barry Sternlicht’s Starwood Capital has bought 1414 Ave. of Americas for $72 million and intends to turn it into a hotel, sources told The Post.

At one time, Ian Schrager and Norman Sturner of Murray Hill Properties also had plans to empty the building of its office tenants and create a hotel at the site on the southeast of W. 58th Street by Central Park.

Sources said off-market dealmaker Ivan Hakimian put the deal together. He did not return calls for comment.

Public records show the deed was signed by an executive from local mortgage investors, RCG Longview, which also took back a $36 million mortgage on the property.

Murray Hill had purchased the building in Nov. 2007 for $120.5 million and at that time took a loan of $65 million which public records show had been transferred to RCG Longview in July.

Schrager is no longer involved in the project.

The RCG executive and Norman Sturner also did not return a call for comment.
