Boys basketball holiday roundup: Rice nips Wheeler, takes opener in Beach Ball Classic

Melvin Johnson scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds, Jermaine Sanders added 15 points and Richard Council chipped in 10 points and five rebounds as Rice remained undefeated, topping Wheeler (Ga.), 61-60, in the opening round of the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Raiders (5-0), ranked fourth in New York City by The Post, meet Douglass (Okla.) in the quarterfinals Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. No. 2 Boys & Girls, also down in Myrtle Beach, gets underway Tuesday against Clark County (Ky.) at 8:45 p.m..

No. 5 St. Raymond 77, Sunset (Ore.) 56: Kerwin Okoro poured in a team-high 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds, Daniel Dingle had 22 points, nine rebounds and five assists and Shane Rector and Myron Hickman tallied 10 points apiece for the Ravens (6-3) in the opener of the Les Schwab Invitational (Portland, Ore.). St. Raymond, which outscored Sunset 35-21 in the second half, meets Lincoln (Ore.) in the quarterfinals.

Tottenville 58, Freedom (Pa.) 57: Kevin Alesi scored 27 points and Mark Caravello had 10 for Tottenville (6-4). The Pirates face James Garfield (Calif.) in the semifinals of the KSA Holiday Tournament in Orlando, Fla.

South Shore 68, Jamestown (N.Y.) 64: Shamiek Sheppard made 14-of-20 shots from the field and finished with a game-high 30 points, Wayne Martin (eight rebounds) and Kwanique Martin each followed with nine points and Terrence Samuel added eight points and five rebounds for the Vikings (5-5) in the opening round of the Josh Palmer Fund Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Elmira, N.Y. South Shore has now won five in a row and meets Horseheads (N.Y.) in the semifinals Tuesday night at 8 p.m.

St. Andrew’s (Fla.) 63, Poly Prep 54, Overtime: Bradley Gifford had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Blue Devils (3-1) in the opening round of the Fort Lauderdale Beach Holiday Classic. Poly Prep meets West Boca Raton (Fla.) tomorrow in the consolation bracket.
